How a cheeseburger restored my faith in humanity

Would you like to hear a happy little story about how a cheeseburger restored my faith in humanity?

Cool.

We’ve lived in the same house for over 10 years and our next door neighbor is about the nicest guy I’ve ever met. Let’s call him “Bob.” He’s in his late 40s and he has Downs Syndrome. We’ll chat when we’re mowing the yard or walking our dogs. Heck, I even bowled on his bowling team a few years back.

Last month, I saw his mother and she looked stressed. She said that Bob had lost his job. For over 25 years, Bob had worked in fast food and the restaurant where he worked was sold. He was out of a job and it was starting to drag him down. I told her that I talked with a lot of business owners and that I would keep my ears open for opportunities.

THE VERY NEXT DAY I went to a networking event with the Brookfield Chamber and met Elena Sapp, the Senior Recruiting Specialist for Hy-Vee Corporation. They are in the process of opening a new Wahlburger’s restaurant at the Corners of Brookfield. I explained the situation, and she offered her card and encouraged me to share it with Bob’s mom.

About a week later, here comes Bob RUNNING across the lawn. Bob and his mother went to see Elena and the Wahlburger’s team hired him on the spot. He was shaking, almost crying because he was so excited. I’ve never seen him more excited and he’s never been so vibrant. It was pure joy.

After celebrating with him for a minute, I went to the computer to thank Elena. She said it was a pleasure and they were excited to have him on board.

This story makes me smile. It makes me happy for Bob and it makes me hungry for a Wahlburger’s Cheeseburger – WHICH IS AMAZING, BTW. I had one on my last trip to Las Vegas and I’m anxiously awaiting this one opening.

I could talk about the “power of networking” or how important it is to “send your intentions to the universe,” but I’ll just stick with this: The Wahlburger’s team must have some good people on staff. I know they now have another good one with my friend Bob.

The restaurant opens on 9/24 and I’m organizing a group outing with the Brand Crafted Social Club to go there. We are going to meet at the restaurant on Tuesday, October 22 at 11:30am. If you’d like to attend, simply email me and we’ll look for you at the restaurant!
