I Didn't Name My Company
Do you have a dream? Is there something you've always wanted to do? You think about it, you daydream and wonder WHAT IF??! Welp, my "what if" became a "let's go" recently and I formed my new company Small Step Solutions.
When the business was announced, I received a ton of well wishes and encouragement. It was so satisfying to know that my family and friends believed that I wouldn't fall off a mountain like Wile E. Coyote. I also received positive feedback for the name. One of the most common questions I received was "How did you come up with the name?"
Here's a secret: I didn't.
My wife Abbie and I were out to dinner with our High School Freshman, Sam. For those of you who know her, she is a brilliant artist. Her fearlessness to create is absolutely inspirational. At dinner, I shared that I was stumped with a name for my new company. I told her that I wanted something that would inspire people to think big, take risks and dream about achieving the impossible. She paused for a second and blurted "Name it Small Step. You know, like the moon landing. 'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.' It's probably the biggest thing we've ever done and it's pretty cool." My wife and I stared at each other knowing that she had done it.
She didn't stop there.
As an artist, she thinks visually and she whipped out her phone and drew the company logo on the spot. She "saw" the moon boot print and the crescent moon. We agreed we didn't want a total space cadet theme so we stayed away from rockets and stars and stuff. She also knows I'm a huge Chicago Bears fan, so, we used their colors. Sorry Packers fans, had to do it.
In a matter of 5 minutes with a rush of creative genius she changed my life. I love it. Every time I see the logo I'm inspired to listen to what someone needs and try to "nail it" like she did for me.
PS - the final logo design was done by my friend Kevin Kosterman with ebean design. He is also brilliant. Hire him and pay him lots of money.
